Homeschool Preschool

Homeschooling preschool aged children is fun. If you can instill a love of learning in your children early then they will become self learners when they become older. Right now my three youngest are ages 2, 3, and 4. Since they are so close in age it easy to teach them all together. This is what I'm doing right now in our homeschool preschool class.

Letter of the Week

Each week we learn a new letter. I start with "A" and I go through the alphabet until everyone has mastered all 26 letters. Currently we are on our second time through. We learn our letter 4 days out of the week. (The other day we do our Bible curriculum.) Each day we do each of the following activities based on the letter of the week. For example, let's say this week's letter is "C". Below is listed the type of work that we do each day. Plus, you can click on the links to see examples of the worksheets that the children would work on.

I give the children different tracing and crafts each day but click on the same letter on Starfall all week and we also read the same Tumble Book all week. Preschoolers enjoy repetition and also it helps them learn.

When going over the letter I teach letter recognition and phonics at the same time. For example, when I hand out the crafts that start with "C" I might say something like, "here is a cat. Cat starts with "C." "C" says," and then I say the two sounds that "C" makes. Or I may ask the children to tell me what letter it is or what sound it makes. This method is highly effective. And the best part is that the children feel more like they are having fun than learning. Of course learning is fun. So I'm glad that they see it that way.

What about colors, shapes, and the like in homeschool preschool?

I'm glad you asked. We read a lot of library books. And I do mean a lot. I check out books on colors, shapes, and whatever else young children need to learn. We read the books several times during the six week period that we have them. (I have a teacher's library card.) We also learn those things just by going through our everyday lives. I point out objects and tell what color they are. I have the children count to 10 or to 20 when they wash their hands. I start teaching them their body parts in the tub when they are just a little over a year old.

It's all done very casually but the children learn what they need to know. Homeschooling is just a way of life to us. We are constantly learning or teaching throughout the day. You could probably teach a child everything they need to know through Kindergarten without ever actually having to sit them down at a desk and chair and formally "teach" them.

Homeschool Resources We Use

There are so many great resources on the internet that it is possible to spend very little money and still provide your children with a great homeschool education. Below are some of the resources that I use frequently.

Bible Curriculum
Little Blessings is not a free curriculum but it is well worth the price. I have used the program for a few years and it has paid for itself many times over, in my opinion. The creators of the curriculum also provide excellent customer service.

Free Printables

There are probably hundreds if not thousands of sites that offer free homeschool printables. Below are the ones that I go back to over and over again.

Free Phonics Program

All I can say is that Starfall is a fantastic site to use to teach your children phonics. Children could navigate this site and practically teach themselves.

Completely Free Phonics Programs I Use to Homeschool My Preschoolers

Different Approaches to Teaching Phonics
I have been using Starfall.com for a couple of years now. The children really like it and that program helped my second son learn phonics pretty quickly. I still use it but my daughter (who is almost 4) is actually learning her letters and phonics better with flashcards.

My 4 year old (who will be 5 in a few days) is a beginner reader; so we have been reading a lot of beginner reader books from the library along with working our way through the McGuffey Primer. I have also printed some easy books off of Ed Helper for him. But I have to say that I am extremely disappointed with Ed Helper and I will not renew my subscription when it expires.

Anyway, a lot of times we read through all of the beginner books a week or more before it's time for us to return to the library. And we only do about 3 lessons in the primer a week to prevent boredom.

Free Printable Phonics Books
So, today I did a search online to see if there are any free printable phonics books online. And I'm glad I did. I found Progressive Phonics. This site almost seems too good to be true. But it really is completely free and it offers a comprehensive phonics program complete with free printable phonics books.

Today I printed out the first book which covers the short "a" sound. It is 45 pages long so I didn't think we'd get very far. But my son and I read the book for about 15 minutes until I had to start dinner. And after dinner he asked if we could read some more. We read for almost an hour. The book really held his attention because it is full of silly stories. And since I do most of the reading and he reads a few words here and there, he didn't tire of it like he does with McGuffey after about 10 minutes.

I am so excited about this program that I am going to print out all of the books over the next couple of days. Starfall used to have free phonics books as well. I printed out the first one and after my son had completed that one I went back to print the next one only to find out that the free books were gone and are now only available for purchase. So, I won't make that mistake twice.

Worksheets to Go Along with Phonics Lessons
On Progressive Phonics there are also worksheets that you can print to go along with the books. I'll check those out as well. So with the following resources you can teach your child phonics for just the price of your internet connection (which you're paying for regardless), printer ink, printer paper, and gas (for traveling to and from the library).

Free Ways to Teach Children Phonics

Bible Activity Books - Make Your Own for Free

My four and five year old really enjoy the jumbo coloring and activity books that are sold in dollar stores. There's a little of something for each child - dot to dot, word searches, secret messages, coloring, and more. So I went on a search for some bible activity books like the jumbo ones that we can use for homeschool. I have not found anything to my liking so I started putting together my own.

In each Bible activity book I try to include (if I can find one) a:
  • coloring page
  • maze
  • word search
  • crossword puzzle
  • dot to dot
  • secret message
  • journaling page
  • blank page - for children to draw their own picture of the lesson
  • word search
  • bible verse copywork
  • cut and paste craft

Here are instructions on how to put together the bible activity books.
  • Use the coloring page as the "cover" for the Bible activity books.
  • Print on the front and back of each page. This makes it look like a real book and it saves on paper. Don't worry too much about the order of the the other pages except for the pages for the cut and paste craft.
  • For the cut and paste, cut a piece of construction paper the same size as the other sheets. Place that page second to last. And make the page that the children will be cutting out the last one. This way you can carefully detach the last page from the book for easy cutting. (The children paste their work onto the construction paper.)
  • Then staple all of the pages together. Four staples pretty close to the edge should be sufficient. This way the pages open up almost flat.
  • You may also want to hole punch the books so that they can be stored in a large 3 ring binder once the children move on to a new lesson.

Where to find pages for your Bible activity books.

I get almost all of my pages for free from the internet. At first it was time consuming but I have gotten more effective with my searches on Google. When searching for coloring pages, I type in what I am looking for, press enter, and then click on images. I usually find a well done coloring page on the first page of Google.

Also here are some sites that I frequently get pages from:

It does take a bit of time to put together our own Bible activity books. But I can make puts that appeal to my children and help make learning more fun.

A Quick Trains Unit Study

Last night my five year old asked what a caboose is.So I told him we'd do a train lesson today. Here are the free materials that we used for the lesson.

Prep Work

Before we started the lesson I put together a coloring and activity book about trains. There are several trains printable activity pages from Homeschooling at About.com. I just selected a few pages that were age appropriate and combined them with a couple of trains coloring pages and this trains activity book. Then I stapled all of the pages together.

How it Went

First we talked about trains. Usually we read a book from netlibrary.org but I couldn't find one this time. So I just explained about the different cars and some of the people who work on the train.

Then we watched the following videos. I was surprised at how long the videos held the children's attention. While watching the videos I pointed out the tracks, different parts of the train, and some of the cars.

Then the children completed their workbooks.

And lastly they made a train paper craft from DLK-Teach. I printed out the pages that are already colored and let the children cut out and paste the train onto a sheet of construction paper.

Peanuts Unit Study

Links are at the end of the post.

While searching for printable comic books I came across The Adventures fo Buddy McNutty. That reminded me of a very educational activity book on peanuts that I printed out a few years back. That made me think that it would be fun for the little ones to learn all about peanuts. That could include learning about George Washington Carver and all things peanutty. Ha ha, I know peanutty isn't a real word. But it's fun to say. Really, try it.

So far I've found an activity book about peanuts called In a Nutshell. It looks like it's to be used for elementary students.

Yes! I found it. The worksheets I printed out for my son when we first started homeschooling is from AboutPeanuts.com. You can choose a lesson plan for grades K - 2 or grades 3 - 5. It covers subject areas math, science, social studies, geography and language arts. Love that!

The lesson plans in the teacher's guide lists several crafts to do with or about peanuts. But if those don't appeal to us we'll probably try some of the following.

Peanuts Crafts

Activity, Coloring, and Comics About Peanuts

Websites About Peanuts

And in our house no lesson is complete without a video, preferably a free one from You Tube. :) I submit to you The American Peanut Story, for your viewing pleasure.

I guess I'll pick up a bag of shelled peanuts at the store this weekend. They will be for the crafts. Two of my children are too young to eat penauts, possible choking hazard. So I'll have to keep a close eye on my two year old especially during craft time next week. Better yet, I'll probably have him play with Legos on the floor while the others use the peanuts at the table.

Ham Radio Mini Unit Study

I didn't even know what a Ham radio was until I found a comic about them online a few years ago. Actually, I printed out the comic for my son and he schooled me on amateur radio. Homeschooling works both ways I guess. :)

Anyway, as of this post there are now six comics available for free online about amateur radio. And there is a seventh one underway. Reading all of the comics will provide a novice with a very detailed understanding of ham radio.

The books can be printed out as comics or coloring books. Nice!

Also, eHow has a seven part series called Introduction to Ham Radio. I think my oldest will find this video particularly interesting.

          Dental Health Mini Unit Study

I am working on getting my son to the point to where he can brush his teeth well, independently. Hopefully this fun mini unit on brush your teeth will help.

          Crafts

          Games/Activities

          Coloring/Activity Books

A Child's Book of Teeth is a very entertaining book. It was originally published in 1918 by a dentist. The dentist warns not to waste your dental powder in the sink! Ha ha, thank God for the invention of toothpaste. But despite it's age, the book still has quite a bit of educational value.

Here are other booths on dental health. They are all in PDF format and are either coloring books, activity books or both.
